By Adaptive Information Visualization I refer to visualization approaches capable of understanding the user's needs and to adapt the visualization to the user's interests. It brings together techniques from Information Visualization, User modeling and Adaptive systems into a new, yet unexplored, field of research.

There are some synonyms, such as:

  • Personalized nformation visualizations
  • Individualized information visualization
  • User-centered adaptive visualization
  • User adaptive information visualization

[edit] Content of the user model

Traditional adptive hypermedia systems builds a model of the goals, preferences, and knowledge of each individual user.

[edit] Adapting to what

(some ideas on adaptive hypermedia taken from (brusilovsky, UMUAI, 2001):

  • User data: various characteristics of the user, some of these can be goals/tasks, knowledge, background, preferences, interests, and individual traits (eg. personality factors, cognitive factors, learning styles')
  • Usage data: data about user interaction with the system that can not be resolved to user characteristics
  • Environment data: all aspects of user environment that are not related to the users themselves

[edit] What can be adapted

(ideas that works for adaptive hypermedia, taken from (brusilovsky, UMUAI, 2001):

  • Adaptive presentation, or content level adaption. E.g. text adaption, multimedia adaption. On multimedia adaption there are methods for adapting the modality of presentation on the basis of user preferences, abilities, learning styles, and context of works. The adaptation of modality try to adapt the different type of media with wich the information is presented to the user.
  • Adaptive navigation support, or link level adaption. E.g. Link hiding, sorting, annotation, guidance, hypertext map adatation
